Beta-Caryophyllene, Brings Earthy and Spiciness
What is Beta-Caryophyllene?
If the smell of fresh cracked pepper makes your nose itch, you can blame the prominent terpene beta-caryophyllene. Found in cloves, hops, cinnamon, oregano, basil, and black pepper, beta-caryophyllene is responsible for strong earthy aromas and flavors. Cannabis high in this terpene tends to taste peppery, woody, or earthy. Some individuals enjoy the flavor it provides and specifically seek out cannabis high in it. It can cause a slight tickle in the throat, especially with vape pens.
Benefits of Beta-Caryophyllene
Beta-caryophyllene has a multitude of benefits ranging from pain control to mood enhancement. This terpene has been seen to help depression, anxiety, muscle spasms, insomnia, and acts as an anti-inflammatory. Those who suffer from mental or mood disorders may find that they have an easier time managing low moods using cannabis high in this terpene. In addition, because it binds with the CB2 receptors there are huge anti-inflammatory benefits. This can help those with arthritic problems, gut inflammation, myocarditis, or general joint pain. Those who depend on NSAIDs or corticosteroids may find some natural relief with cannabis.

Because beta-caryophyllene can bind to the CB2 receptors in our endocannabinoid system it also helps to reduce inflammation and the psychoactive effects of THC. If you ever find that you are an uncomfortable level of high (you took too many edibles, or forgot you had taken tincture before you smoked) you can chew fresh black pepper or cloves to help bring you back down. It may not taste the best, but because these things are high in beta-caryophyllene it will bind to your CB2 receptors and help mitigate the effects of too much THC. CBD alone is also a powerful tool to help control the euphoric effects of THC.
Strains Dominant in Beta-Caryophyllene
The effects of beta-caryophyllene are not sedative. It is best used to help calm nerves, ease depression, and help control pain. Paired with the terpene Myrcene, it can help create a stronger pain relief. Those with anxiety should look for it paired with Linalool to help ease stress and nerves.
