Where is Limonene Found?

The invigorating and potent smell of lemon based cleaners is to blame on the prominent terpene Limonene. Found in citrus like orange, lime, and grapefruit, rosemary, and juniper, this terpene is responsible for the uplifting effects of cannabis. Limonene can produce a positive mood boost without triggering anxiety in many patients. This makes it great for individuals that need help balancing their low moods or as a perk in the morning.

Benefits of Limonene

More than just a happy and uplifting terpene, Limonene has antifungal, antibacterial, and antitumor properties. Many patients find that Limonene dominant cannabis can help them through low moods or times when they lack energy. Patients who suffer with depression or bipolar may find that this is helpful for when they need a pick-me-up in low times. Those with anxiety may also find that while it is uplifting, it may spike the anxiety like other terpenes can. In addition, it has been shown that this terpene can help aid in wound healing making it a suitable additive to cleaning products because it works as an antimicrobial. Use of the terpene showed a restoration in damaged tissues over time. This is a positive for both medical and cleaning uses. In fact, you may notice that some cleaning products smell strongly of citrus.

High levels of Limonene have also shown to reduce tumors. In human and rodent studies, it was shown that the growth of skin and mammary tumors was suppressed by Limonene. In addition, the effects of Limonene on lung and brain cancer was also studied and found that extremely high doses of this terpene killed tumor cells. Keep in mind that in these studies the doses of terpenes are far higher than what is found in your medical cannabis. Using cannabis for cancer can help in a multitude of ways but it is always important to consult with your specialists regarding your treatments.

Strains Dominant in Limonene

Keep in mind that with medical marijuana there are a lot of variables at play. The percentage of other terpenes that are dominant may greatly affect how the other terpenes play a part. With cannabis it is important to remember that the “entourage effect” can make some strains differ from others in many ways. Combined with THC and CBD, terpenes are a powerful player in your cannabis and how it makes you feel and how it interacts with your body.
